Manipulative/Manual Physiotherapy

Running Biomechanical and Sport-Specific Assessments

Functional Dry Needling (FDN)

Athletico physiotherapist Richa has received advanced postgraduate training in the performance of Functional Dry Needling. Richa has also been trained in the unique techniques involved in performing Dry Needling in the Pelvic Floor region by Specialists in the US.

Dry needling involves the penetration of Tight Muscle Trigger Points with a sterile needle in order to provide quick and effective relief from your symptoms. Dry needling is a technique similar to Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) where an acupuncture needle is used to relax tight muscles and stimulate the healing of over sensitive nerves. Its called “dry” because nothing is injected into the body.

Intra Muscular Stimulation (IMS)

IMS also known as GUNN IMS is a unique assessment and treatment system used commonly for treating chronic pain syndromes. The principles of IMS are a true Canadian invention by past UBC professor and Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Chan Gunn who after many years of research and development is credited for creation of the unique IMS system of assessment and treatment.

Dr. Gunn and the iSTOP institute has over the years trained hundreds of physiotherapists and physicians in this unique assessment and treatment system.

The Gunn IMS educational program which is administered by the UBC has very strict admission criteria which is thought to be one of the factors responsible for the scarce amount of Certified IMS practitioners in Ontario.


When clinically indicated, a specific examination is performed to establish if a patient would be a candidate for IMS treatment. Your Athletico Certified IMS physiotherapist will then provide treatment-combining IMS with other research-based treatment strategies to get you better, Faster!

Custom and Over-The-Counter Orthotics

Athletico Physiotherapists have Years of experience with the prescription and design of Custom and Over-the-Counter Foot Orthotics and Custom Footwear. Our orthotics are designed to provide comfort and assist with obtaining optimal alignment of your body, while mitigating cumulative stresses on your joints, spine, muscles and ligaments.

The findings of a thorough biomechanical static and dynamic analysis while non-weight bearing, standing, walking and running is performed by Athletico physiotherapists to determine if you need custom or over-the-counter orthotics.

Properly fitted orthotics (custom-made or over-the-counter) are an important part of your foot health and research has shown a direct correlation between improperly fitted footwear and excessive strain and wear on your joints, muscles and ligaments leading to repetitive stress injuries including shin splints and many knee, ankle, hip and spinal conditions.

All Custom-Made Orthotics at Athletico are prescribed and dispensed by specially-trained and experienced physiotherapists. Medical Compression and Sports Socks & Stockings

At Athletico, we have Years of experience with the measurement, prescription and dispensing of Custom and Over-the-Counter Medical and Sports Compression Socks and Stockings.

Compression Therapy above the pressure gradient of 20mm of Hg is considered a medical device and should be prescribed by a health provider, including an Athletico Physiotherapist. Research has shown many advantages of Graduated Compression Therapy in the Prevention and Management of many lower extremity repetitive-stress injuries as well as Cardiovascular conditions including varicose veins, lymphedema, CHF etc.

Athletico physiotherapists have received advanced post-graduate training in the assessment, prescription and measurement of Medical and Sports Compression Garments and will be able to evaluate and determine if you would benefit from Medical or Sports Compression Therapy. Your Athletico physiotherapist will review your cardiovascular and circulatory status and combine this information with the mechanics of your body, both static and during movement to help find the best management plan for you, which may include Medical or Sport-Specific Compression Therapy.

Concussion Management

Concussions have quickly become a nationwide concern. The Shift Concussion Management Program provides an advanced approach to concussion awareness and management, guiding injured athletes and non-athletes to a safe return to both sport participation and daily life activities. It is well established that concussions tend to go under-reported in youth sports, and this stems, in part, from a lack of knowledge of both the signs and symptoms of a concussion and the proper recognition and management of the injury. The Athletico Concussion Management program emphasizes a continuum of care from education and baseline testing to injury management and return-to-play or activities of daily living.

It is important for the clinician to be able to effectively identify physical signs of a concussive injury to the brain and manage these symptoms quickly and effectively. Concussions can be a result of a sports injury or car accident and are more common then we have thought. A patient with concussion-related deficits post 3 months of trauma are diagnosed as having "Post-Concussion Syndrome". Some signs of PCS can be a combination of:

TMJ - Jaw Pain Physiotherapy

Tanya, Team Athletico's Registered Massage Therapist has graduated with honours in Massage Therapy from Trillium College. Tanya is registered with the College of Massage Therapist of Ontario. With just under a decade of military service, Tanya is a proud veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Since childhood Tanya has had a keen interest in body health and physical function.

Tanya is well-versed in many different modalities that massage therapy has to offer, and is passionate about helping others create a healthy balance in clients lives either by relieving any pain, stress, or to simply obtain a relaxation massage.
